Affordable Neighborhoods Inside Houston

The Best Affordable Neighborhoods Inside Houston’s 610 Loop

Looking for affordable neighborhoods inside Houston?

While Houston has many excellent suburbs (I’m from one myself!), I prefer to live and work inside the city’s urban core so that I can more easily enjoy the many, fun amenities Houston has to offer. I specialize in helping residents find housing inside Houston’s 610 Loop, a 38-mile-long, circular interstate freeway that surrounds Downtown Houston and the heart of the city proper. Many of Houston’s most famous and popular neighborhoods are located inside the Loop, and some of them are EXPENSIVE!

Fortunately, that doesn’t mean you can’t live in a great Inner Loop neighborhood in Houston on a budget. I help real estate clients find homes for sale and for rent inside the 610 Loop all the time in great neighborhoods they can afford. If you’d like some help finding a home in Houston, contact me!

Here are my picks for the best affordable neighborhoods inside the 610 Loop!

1. Near Northside

One of Houston’s oldest neighborhoods, Near Northside has seen considerable gentrification in recent years as an older generation of residents ages out and younger people move in. Large swathes of the neighborhood are being redeveloped with exciting new amenities, including the Hardy Yard Project. The Project is underway to revive the area’s old vacant railyard into a cultural haven with new parks, restaurants, and stores all on tap. Currently, hot restaurants such as Rocco’s and Pier 16 Crawfish & Wings have already made the neighborhood a Houston food-culture essential, and the beautiful White Oak Music Hall is the city’s top destination for rock fans.

2. Lindale Park

Adjacent to the Near Northside area is Lindale Park, an amazingly cute and charming old neighborhood inside the city of Houston. Lindale Park has remained a small, quiet, residential community for 100 years without being overrun by shops, bars, restaurants, or other attractions. This is a great place to live quietly and happily in the city, with easy access to Houston’s better shopping and dining destinations. Streets are lined with mature oak trees and classic bungalows and cottages. The Lindale Park Civic Club maintains common areas and enforces deed restrictions, ensuring that lot sizes and building lines remain uniform. As a result, the community has a consistent, manicured feel.

3. Brooke Smith

Brooke Smith is another historic Northside Houston neighborhood that has undergone a renaissance in recent years. Brooke Smith is characterized by its many restored older homes, including beautiful bungalows and Victorians. Deed restrictions have kept this community free from townhomes, but it’s still one of the most affordable Inner Loop neighborhoods to purchase a free-standing home. When they aren’t chilling in their traditional front and back yards, Brooke Smith residents can often be found at hipster hotspots like D&T Drive Inn and Heights House Hotel or at older neighborhood spots like the tongue-tingling Taqueria Laredo.

4. East Downtown

Once a sparse and desolate home to industrial businesses and warehouses, today East Downtown in Houston (often shortened to EaDo) has exploded with hot bars and restaurants as the city’s young cultural scene shifts to this part of town. There are many affordable homes popping up within walking distance to destinations like Truck Yard, where you can ride the ferris wheel with a cold cocktail in your hand, and Niel’s Bahr, a geek paradise of a watering hole where you can play vintage Nintendo games and rifle through huge stacks of comic books. Best of all, it’s just five minutes away from the city’s Central Business District

5. Midtown

For nearly 20 years now, nightlife has drawn young people to this vibrant section of Houston. Adjacent to the skyscrapers of downtown, Midtown Houston is full of modern apartment complexes and starter homes perfect for students, roommates, and anyone else who wants to feel plugged into the urban action 24/7. Many of the city’s top clubs and bars are located here, drawing young people from across the region to Midtown every weekend. There are multiple parks nearby and some of the city’s best public transportation options. Its central location makes commuting a breeze to almost any area of Houston.

6. Sunset Heights

Sunset Heights is an amazing, patchwork neighborhood that’s part of the Greater Heights Area in Houston. Smaller, older homes sit side-by-side with new-construction townhomes and large custom builds, forming a diverse community with a tight-knit, neighborly feel. Sunset Heights is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts thanks to the nearby Halbert Park and Paul Carr Jogging Trail. It’s a short drive to Downtown Houston and the Texas Medical Center, making it a commuter’s paradise. Foodies will love the redeveloped Houston Farmers Market, which boasts a dizzying array of fresh produce, meats, and other cooking essentials.
