Westbury is located in Southwest Houston north of U.S. 90 Alternate, just outside of the Texas Medical Center. This neighborhood is a hidden gem with much to offer residents and a lot of potential for future growth.

Accessibility: With a Walk Score® of 35, Westbury isn’t a particularly accessible neighborhood. Since the neighborhood’s bike-ability and transit scores are also low, prospective residents should plan on completing chores by car.

Parks, Recreation, and Green Spaces: Chimney Rock Park provides a playground, tennis courts, and a multi-sport playing field. Lee Hager Park is a similar local greenspace that also includes a walking trail. Residents looking to really stretch their legs might prefer the Willow Waterhole Greenspace Conservancy Reserve, which features 290 acres of wildlife, walking trails, waterways, and a pavilion. The Conservancy also hosts periodic community events on-site.

Commute: The neighborhood is situated just north of U.S. 90 Alternate, making highway access a breeze. To hop on Interstate 610, residents only need to travel a short distance northwest.

History: The community was developed in the 1950s and 1960s in an effort to support the post-World War II migration to the suburbs. Ira Berne, the developer, had moved from Westbury, New York and named the community after that town. In 2011, Westbury officially became a part of the Brays Oak district.

Shopping:  This area is known for the former Westbury Square, a once-popular shopping destination that closed up shop after the development of the Galleria. The structure was regarded as one of the most beautiful shopping centers in the city due to its Italian architectural influence. The center of the Square often held choirs, glassblowing demonstrations, and other events to wow visitors. Today, residents typically expect to drive to other communities for similar retail experiences.

Community: Since the neighborhood has yet to be fully gentrified, locals who favor communities like the Heights and Montrose often choose to move to Westbury due to its more affordable home values. The neighborhood is also home to two of Houston’s top schools, making it a favorite among young families.

Culture: Although the general area only hosts approximately 23 restaurants, it receives a lot of love from residents, who typically enjoy all the quirks and perks the neighborhood has to offer. Karaoke bars, a yearly rodeo trail, and parades are just some of what locals look forward to for entertainment.
