A leafy residential community, University Place and the surrounding area offer residents unique  urban-suburban vibes. There is plenty to do while still feeling right at home.

Accessibility: Walk Score® gives this neighborhood a well-deserved Walk Score of 70 since most errands can be completed by foot. It might surprise some to know that the community is actually considered to be more bikeable with an impressive score of 74. For those who’d rather take public transportation to get to where they need to be, the area offers ample transit opportunities, including approximately 12 bus lines that pass through the neighborhood.

Parks, Recreation, and Green Spaces: Although there are a few small green spaces in this area like the Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden, Fleming Park, and Old Braeswood Park, nearby Hermann Park draws the most attention. It contains the Houston Zoo, a golf course, Miller Outdoor Theatre, a Japanese Garden, and countless other attractions. Brays Bayou Greenway Trail at the south end of the University area also attracts numerous visitors.

Commute: Since this neighborhood has good public transportation, commuters may be able to rely on it to get around the city. For those who prefer to or must drive, Interstate 69 and Route 59 at the north of the University area provide easy access to the highway.

History: Located to the east of West University Place, the University Place is so named because of its proximity to Rice University. If any of the street names sound strangely familiar to you, it might be because in the 1920s, Lillian Nicholson, a Rice University student and English major, named several streets after famous classic authors such as Jonathan Swift.

Shopping: Nearby Rice Village provides great shopping for visitors and residents, and Downtown is just less than six miles away. Those who’d like to keep their business in the neighborhood won’t be disappointed, however, as there are more than 200 restaurants, bars, and coffee shops in the area.

Community: Although the neighborhood is largely residential, the area offers so much in terms of shopping and transportation that it maintains a mixed urban-suburban appeal. With a prime location near Downtown, Rice Village, and Texas Medical Center, it’s also a great neighborhood to live in for those searching for work in one of those communities.

Culture: There is always plenty to do in the University Place. For example, the neighborhood is home to cultural institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts. Although the community has its own nightlife and restaurant scene, other vibrant nearby neighborhoods like Downtown are just a short ride away. To the east of the area, Hermann Park provides several opportunities for families to spend time together, whether that means enjoying a day at the Houston Zoo or simply throwing a Frisbee in the park.
