Historic First Ward

First Ward, located within the 610 Loop, is one of Houston’s oldest historic districts and was one of the original four wards in the city. This neighborhood is filled with art and culture, amazing food, and a tight-knit atmosphere.

Accessibility: Prospective residents and visitors will be happy to know that First Ward has an excellent Walk Score (89) and Transit Score (86). This means that most errands can be completed by foot in First Ward, and if you have to take public transportation for any reason, you can pretty much count on First Ward delivering. With a Bike Score of 57, some parts of the neighborhood are good for biking while others are not.

Parks, Recreation, and Green Spaces: There are a few SPARK parts in this area at the local elementary schools. The closest public park for picnics and exercise is Spotts Park, and Memorial Park is close by too. A short ride along the hike and bike trail will lead you to Allen’s Landing Park in downtown. This is a historic park often called Houston’s “Plymouth Rock.” This site was one of Houston’s original ports and fell into disarray until the Buffalo Bayou Partnership revitalized it. Today, Allen’s Landing contains hike and bike trails and stunning waterfront views.

Commute: First Ward is located close to the 610 Loop, so visitors don’t need to worry about highway access. I-45 to the west is also close to First Ward. Public transportation may also be a viable option for commuters since First Ward has such robust public transportation.

History: First Ward was one of the original first four wards in Houston created by John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen in 1840. The area was the business center of the city and represents one of Houston’s first ports. In 1866, part of First Ward was split off to create Fifth Ward. Today, First Ward is known as a thriving arts district with plenty of green space and amazing waterfront views.

Shopping: Sawyer Heights Village is a popular shopping destination in First Ward. The Downtown Houston Shopping District is also a nearby option.

Community: First Ward is a tight-knit community, thanks in part to the First Ward Civic Counsel. The group routinely organizes community cleanup efforts and actively protects the neighborhood’s historic character. Even though sections of First Ward are commercial, First Ward is generally a very cozy place to live.

Culture: Just because First Ward is a historic neighborhood doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a fantastic culture. It’s home to a growing arts scene and several delicious and diverse restaurants, such as Café Brussels.  There is always something to do here and in nearby neighborhoods, so visitors don’t have to worry about getting bored. First Ward also has the reputation of being an incredibly convenient neighborhood to live in due to its public transportation and accessibility – a huge breath of fresh air for those fortunate enough to live there.
