Forget just being a neighborhood – Bellaire is considered its own city! The area is bordered by Houston and West University and consists mostly of residential homes.

Accessibility: With a Walk Score® of 60, residents can expect to be able to complete some of their chores by foot here. There is also some bike infrastructure around town. Although there is some public transportation within the area, travelers should plan their journeys ahead of time.

Parks, Recreation, and Greenspaces: The area includes numerous parks and green spaces, including Ware Family Park, Feld Park, Russ Pitman Park, Evergreen Park, Evelyn’s Park, and more.

Commute: Since Interstate 610 runs straight through the middle of the neighborhood and Interstate 69 is just to the north, the neighborhood’s residents have superior highway access. Even though the neighborhood is residential, there are some high-rise office buildings located nearby the 610 Loop that provide jobs within a short distance.

History: William Wright Baldwin founded Bellaire in 1908 in the middle of Westmoreland Farms in response to a need for both housing and a trade center. Like many Houston neighborhoods, Bellaire’s population skyrocketed during the post-World War II building boom. However, since Houston had annexed the land surrounding the neighborhood by the end of the 1940s, the land growth of the city has long been ceased. The city’s name means “good air,” a nod to the breezes it receives from the coast.

Shopping: Meyerland Plaza provides the neighborhood with some shopping. Those looking for more robust shopping centers may want to head north to the Galleria, Highland Village, or River Oaks District. While there are certainly perks to living in a residential neighborhood like this one, that can sometimes come at the expense of local amenities like shopping. However, this is Houston; nothing you need is ever too far away!

Community: This neighborhood continues to grow rapidly and provides excellent and affordable housing opportunities just outside of the heart of Houston. Despite its growth, the city maintains a lovely suburban feel and has been referred to as “the City of Homes.” The area is also known for its high-quality schools and abundance of small green spaces, making the neighborhood a favorite among young families and dog lovers.

Culture: Although the area is generally residential, that doesn’t mean that residents and visitors go without great food and entertainment. The city boasts cuisine from all over the world, including at favorite restaurants like Costa Brava Bistro, Charlie’s BBQ, and Thai Cottage.
